This is done by tagging each effect with a 'database' field containing the name of its subset. For example you may want a section for 'Sound Effects' and another for 'Production Music'. You can setup new Synonym relationships by creating new records in the Thesaurus database.įinally, MTools supports multiple 'subsets' which allow you to break your database up into sections for easy searching. This uses the MTools Thesaurus database to find Synonyms to the word you typed and place them into the search field.

MTools also supports Thesaurus functions, via the 'Get Synonyms' button. Using the exclude filter to remove the 'CARTOON' matches will leave with less records to browse through. This is most useful when you search for something, like 'CAR' but you end up with lots of results like 'CARTOON'. You can also 'exclude' items in a filter which is like a boolean 'NOT' term. Subsequent filter operations are the equivalent of having more AND search terms in a search. Filtering allows you to 're-search' within the current 'Found set' to further limit the results. The search page also offers a 'Filter' function which is particularly useful. MTools will perform this search and present the results in the Summary layout. Then click on the Search button (dont press enter or return).

In this page, you can specify a series of words with spaces between them, and chose from AND / OR type searching for these words. If you click in the 'Search' tab at the top of the MTools database, you will see the window shown below. However, MTools also offers mere mortals an easier way to perform a basic boolean search. This Filemaker search technique goes MUCH further, allowing you to setup complex boolean operations with ranges etc, using a powerful set of control characters and syntax. You can then audition, and deliver the files you want. Filemaker will then very quickly show you only the records which match that search term. Then press return, or click in the FIND button in the sidebar (if you have the sidebar visible). The simplest FIND operation is to just type 'Apple-F' inside the MTools Filemaker Database, click in the 'Description' or 'Comment' field and type a word you want to look for. For more detailed information about searching data in Filemaker refer to your Filemaker Manual, or get a book on Filemaker Pro. This is the whole point of having everything stored in a database.įilemaker Pro has many powerful features to make your searching easier and more effective, and we will cover the basics here. The next step is to learn a little about how to search your new library.
